"While looking at the camera screen I concentrate on finding the right proportion of land, loch and sky.

Glancing up at the wider Loch Ness landscape I notice the furrowed line of a river running through a mid-green field and try to get this perspective in the camera shot. Then, suddenly, the bright white of a yacht’s sails nudges in at the edge of the frame and I know this is the moment to press the shutter. A satisfactory sounding click – and I have captured what I feel is an eye-catching scene.

Thanks to the expert – and patient – guidance of Ian MacLeod, I discover that for the first time the picture I had in my mind does in fact turn out to be (almost) as beautiful as the resultant photograph. During the digital camera workshop with Nevispix Photography (www.nevispix.com) around Fort Augustus in the Scottish Highlands, I snap colourful fishing boats, wild primroses and atmospheric mountain scenes.

While I’ve taken countless photos of Scottish scenes, I am finally beginning to understand how perspective, focus, shutter speed and creativity all need to combine to make the difference between an average shot and a photograph that truly showcases Scotland’s natural beauty"
